Wax On…Wax Off

Sex education and advocating “safe sex” is giving teens permission to have sex.

Allowing pre-teen/early teenage girls to get a bikini wax “could be over-sexualizing” them.

Both of these “theories” are totally absurd to me. TOTALLY.

Earlier in the week, ABCs Good Morning America aired a segment titled “Waxing for Girls Younger Than 15?”. A local ad for Unik Wax Salon promoting a special for teens 15 and younger spurred fierce debate. As reported in the original piece, women on “mommy” sites were in an uproar voicing both approval and disgust.

“To encourage it at such a young age is completely inappropriate and disgusting,” a New York City woman said after seeing the ad” [Source]

Inappropriate? Disgusting?

The onset of puberty in the average girl begins roughly around the age of 9-10 and pubic hair is a part of that process, like it or not. [Source] It’s my theory that the hormones and antibiotics present in the meats we consume these days accelerates the start of puberty. [Source]

When I entered puberty I remember my mother having a series of conversations with me about my ever-so-quickly changing body. One of those conversations centered around hair growth (underarms and pubic area) an the importance of personal hygiene.

Aside from being unsightly while growing beyond the panty line like Kudzu or looking like you have two afro puffs in your arm pits, hair holds odor. As a teen I shaved my underarms and bikini line. In no way did this ritual in hygiene and personal maintenance “sexualize” me.

Because I was, and still am, a hairy girl, my mother made it a point to school me on the art of hair removal. Shaving was the only affordable option available to a single mother on a budget. But man…I wish waxing had been a viable option. Hell, I don’t think my mom even knew what waxing was at that time. It would have saved me from the painful bumps of ingrown hairs and the dark coloration under my arms.

The questions I want to ask those who oppose teens waxing…is it the method with which they take issue?

If so, would they be more comfortable with any other depilatory method?

How does waxing “over-sexualize”, or even sexualize, a young girl?

Is a razor or depilatory cream less disgusting and more appropriate?

Seriously, I need someone to explain that logic to me.

  1. waxing eyebrows, legs even underarms are OK but bikini wax at 12 or 13? when I was that age I wasn’t even hairy enough for that…but I can see the point where some think it is over sexualizing…we must admit we wax/shave/nair/veet down there to look sexy for a dude or to be sexier than our friends…lets be real about it. So in that thought yes it would be over sexualizing for a child (key word CHILD) that age. if you are only shaving/waxing the hair that comes out of the pantyline then that’s probably OK but a full on bikini wax with what a landing strip? what is the point in that for a child? who is going to see all that? as for hair holding odor yes it can if you ain’t clean but you can TRIM the area and keep that from happening…

    1. Okay, for clarification..the landing strip is a Brazilian wax and I don’t advocate THAT painful isht for anyone! 🙂 A regular bikini wax removes the hair that grows outside of the panty line. So I do agree on the Brazilian mess.

Who will see it with regards to teens? Teenagers swim during the summer, as did I as a young teen. Do they still “dress out” for gym classes these days…in the locker room? (can you tell I don’t have kids? lol)

I can only speak for myself when I say I wax FOR ME. MOI. I’m hairy as hell and it’s thick and coarse so razors and Nair cause issues for me. Personally, I didn’t find waxing soon enough!! LOL

  2. I was one of the lucky ones that got hit hard with puberty at 9 years old. I completely skipped a training bra and started my period with cramps and all. My mom barely got through the talk about my period so I was never told to shave the pits or the bits. I figured I needed to shave the pits because of all the funky boys in my neighborhood that had the deoderant balls in their pits. I started to trim the bits when i was about 10 because i got sick of the hair down there.

My daughter is only 5 but when she gets old enough I will explain to her how to properly care for herself. I’m not sure if I’ll take her to get waxed or show her how to care for it herself.

  3. I don’t think it over sexualizes anything. I think kids wearing bikinis over sexualizes them and hanging around ratchets. My baby is 2 and is very hairy already so when it comes time to groom she may want waxing and I may just take her. We’ll see.

  4. Looking into a future of raising little girl through the pre-pubescent, and pubescent period, this is an interesting discussion. I would find it hard to believe that shaving or waxing alone would over-sexualize a little girl. Unless they have some indication that it is something that women do for sexual reasons instead of, or in addition to, hygienic reasons, it would probably have no more affect on them than a training bra… like a female rites of passage. As for teenagers, there is so much to reinforce their accelerated sexuality, I don’t think that shaving or waxing will make that much of a difference. If it’s about hygiene, I can see going to a professional if the mother or daughter don’t want to do it themselves.

  5. Wonderful post however , I was wanting to know if you could write a litte more
on this subject? I’d be very grateful if you could elaborate a little bit more. Cheers!
