Throwbacks/Memory Lane

After 2 days, 1 AT&T DSL network outage, 2 RamalamaDingDongs in Bangladesh, 1 Geechie in South Carolina, 1 manager named Brian, and 2 hours troubleshooting a problem that should have taken only 15 minutes, I finally have my Internet connection again. This incident brought to my attention just how addicted I am to being able to surf the net. Without it, I was pacing the hall like a $5 crack whore jones’in for my next fix. It wasn’t pretty. 🙂

I’m a little late with my OSF post but better late than never, right? This week’s theme was to pick a vocalist you wanted to be like and state the reason. My pick was pretty easy. This lady is known as a Diva and an international superstar. She has a decent voice and has been in the entertainment industry for 40+ years. However, this isn’t why I admire her. When I saw the following interview my level of respect for her jumped tenfold.

Diana “The Boss” Ross has a reputation of being tempermental and demanding but the interview shows her close loving relationship with her five children. Unlike many celebrities today, Ms. Ross didn’t allow a nanny to raise her children. With the help of her mom Ms. Ross remained a “hands on” mother. Somehow she managed her career without sacrificing her relationship with her children. For that I say, “KUDOS“!!

Another part of the interview. WARNING: the quality is not good.

I thought about him today. Actually…I think about him at least once a day. Something as obscure as a turkey burger conjures up memories of him. I’m big enough to admit that I miss him.

Thought about calling to say hello so I could hear his voice or sending a text message but that exchange will end like most of our “exchanges“: a walk down memory lane fueled by an undeniable attraction which will have me back at square one. So…I’ll pass.

M2…where-ever you are…”Hi. I miss you.”

This one is for you Doo-Doo Brown.

This week’s theme is “songs by men with perms“. I thought you guys had me stumped with this one but I’m a resourceful lady!! We were told everyone couldn’t pick Prince because he was everyone’s first thought, of course!! Next in line…Michael Jackson. MEH…I’ll pass on him too!! 🙂

The Dreamlovers were an American doo wop group from Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.

Formed in 1956, the group took several names early in its career, recording demos as The Romancers and The Midnighters (under which name they backed Chubby Checker on a 1958 recording of “The Twist”). They recorded briefly for V-Tone Records before signing to Heritage Records, who released their 1961 single “When We Get Married“. The song reached #10 on the US Billboard Hot 100; the next year, their tune “If I Should Lose You” (on End Records) made it to #61.

The group remained active well into the 1960s. “When We Get Married” was covered by The Intruders in 1970. [Source]

Johnnie Harrison Taylor was born in Crawfordsville, AR, on May 5, 1934 (though he usually gave his birth year as 1938); he grew up mostly in nearby West Memphis. He began singing in church as a young child and later moved to Kansas City, where he performed with a gospel group called the Melody Kings; it was through this outfit that he initially met and befriended Soul Stirrers frontman Sam Cooke. In 1953, Taylor left home and moved to Chicago, where he joined the doo wop group the Five Echoes; shortly thereafter, he began performing concurrently with the gospel group the Highway Q.C.’s, which had once been home to Sam Cooke. In 1957, Taylor would replace Cooke in the hugely influential Soul Stirrers, after Cooke departed for a career in secular music.

A few of you were disappointed that I took a week off but as promised, I’m back. The theme this week is wedding songs; songs you played at your wedding or would like to have played at your wedding. Mrs. Grapevine was feeling a little “sentimental” this week.
