The theme this week is remakes. So, with summer right around the corner I went with “Summer Madness“.

My first memory of the song is Kool & The Gang’s version jamming on my father’s stereo. It reminds me of my dad and Sunday mornings in New Orleans when the radio station, WYLD-FM 98, would play jazz until noon. It also reminds me of crawfish boils on Lake Ponchatrain and the smell of incense.

Kool & the Gang is a highly successful American jazz/R&B/soul/funk/disco group. They originally formed in Jersey City, New Jersey, USA in 1964. They went through several musical phases in their career, starting out with a purist jazz sound, becoming practitioners of R&B and funk, progressing to a smooth disco ensemble, and ended the successful period of their career producing pop/R&B crossovers. Fast foward to 1991. Will Smith and Jazzy Jeff releases “Summertime” sampling the instrumental overlayed with Big Willy’s lyrics!!

Here it is the groove slightly transformed
Just a bit of a break from the norm
Just a little somethin to break the monotony
Of all that hardcore dance that has gotten to be
A little bit out of control its cool to dance
But what about the groove that soothes that moves romance

School is out and its a sort of a buzz
A back then I didnt really know what it was
But now I see what have of this
The way that people respond to summer madness
The weather is hot and girls are dressing less
And checking out the fellas to tell em whos best
Riding around in your jeep or your benzos
Or in your nissan stting on lorenzos

I needed a change of scenery. Maybe the flowers will lighten the mood. 🙂

While reading comments on recent posts, I came across Blackstarr. Clicking on the name directed me to their site, The Renaissance For The New Millennium. I was pleasantly surprised to find a brief summary of The Chocl8t Diaries in the article “We Are Not Alone” where they called your girl “a veritable African-American Aphrodite“.  Awwwe…thanks guys!! 😉 Check them out when you have a chance!

Yesterday’s post on the controversial Obama in ’08 t-shirt brought out some crazy, hate-filled, angry people who attempted to pollute my air with their racial epithets and overall nastiness. Not to worry, the comments did not see the light of day for I deleted them. Dissenting opinions are welcome but I refuse to tolerate the name calling. I find it ironic how the anonymity of the internet allows cowards to spew their venom without fear of reprisal but they wouldn’t have the cojones to say these things to your face. Throwing rocks and hiding their hands… (shaking my head).

Today is a new day. A fresh start. Take a deep cleansing breath and let’s keep it moving! 🙂

For those of you who may need a good laugh…

I knew it was coming. I am only surprised that it has taken this long before they’ve stepped out of the shadows. I suspect it will only get uglier as we approach November.

Mulligan’s is a well known local tavern in Marietta, Georgia and is owned by a good ole boy, Mike Norman. He’s known for displaying his ultra conservative views the establishment’s signage like suggesting Hilary Clinton should have married O.J. Well good ole Mike is now selling “Obama 08” t-shirts with a picture of Curious George.

Yessiree Bob!! You got it!! CURIOUS DAYUM GEORGE! Racist, you say? Not good ole boy Mike Norman. Mr Norman believes it’s okay to associate a black man with the caricature of a monkey. I suppose he thinks it’s okay to call any black person a porch monkey and we not be offended.

Norman said those offended are “hunting for a reason to be mad” and insisted he is “not a racist.”

Why picture Obama as Curious George? “Look at him . . . the hairline, the ears, he looks just like Curious George,” Norman said.

He said it’s just a coincidence that the character he chose for the T-shirt is a monkey. Norman said proceeds raised from sales of the T-shirts will be donated to the Muscular Dystrophy Association. [Source]

Several local groups are planning to protest in front of Mulligans today, including The Southern Christian Leadership Conference, the Nation of Islam and the Georgia Association of Latino Elected Officials.

What are your thoughts? Is this racist? Or…are we being “too sensitive” just “hunting for a reason to be mad“?

I must admit, I have never watch Bill Moyers Journal on PBS and I’m not familiar with any of his work. But his essay on Rev. Jeremiah Wright hits the nail on the head.

Take a moment to stop, look, listen with an open mind, then decide for yourself. Feel free to post your opinions but I have no commentary for the video speaks volumes!

Thanks to JsNana for emailing this to me! 😉

I wrote about this foolishness earlier this week (What Would You Do) and I am so glad that MARTA (Atlanta’s rail system) police are investigating and have issued a warrant for her arrest. According to news reports, the police know her name but are not releasing it to the media at this time.

After canvassing the East Lake Station where the suspect reportedly exited the train, MARTA police received an anonymous tip that the incident occurred on March 31, between 2 and 4 p.m. The tipster also indicated the suspect has been known to ride Bus 22.

After identifying the suspect, MARTA police have obtained an arrest warrant.

“We want to assure the public that this is an extremely isolated incident and that customer safety and security are our highest priorities,” stated MARTA Police Chief Wanda Dunham in a release. “We regret that any customer had to endure such harassment while using our system.” Read the full story HERE.

I hope and pray to God they find this girl. If it is determined she is not mentally ill, they need to lock her butt up!! If you did not see the video, you can see it below:

This video disturbed me so much, I can’t begin to tell you. I don’t think I could have sat there watched this girl insult and disrespect the elderly woman AND NOT do anything. Yeah, I understand I could have put myself in harms way but at the very core of my being I know I just could NOT have sat there silent!! All I can think of are my grandmothers (who are both deceased), my mother, and how I would feel if that happened to them.

5/13/08 ***UPDATE****

The young lady has been identified as Nafiza Ziyad and her mother has stated she is bipolar and was off her medication.
