Old School Friday – 13

This week’s theme is ‘best guitar/bass solo”. Immediately I knew who I would choose to feature. I love this woman’s music…her vibe, especially on her first two CDs. However, a cut on her 2nd CD, “Peace Beyond Passion“, caused me to raise an eyebrow and created some inner conflict. Truthfully, I rarely played the CD after listening to “Leviticus: Faggot“…I put the CD away for a loooong time. Don’t worry, that track isn’t featured here. 🙂

Michelle Lynn Johnson (born August 29, 1968 in Berlin, Germany), better known as Meshell Ndegeocello, is an American singer, songwriter, rapper, bassist, and multi-instrumentalist. She was raised in Washington, D.C. where she attended Duke Ellington School of the Arts and Oxon Hill High School. The music press has hailed her as a redeemer of soul music. Her music incorporates funk, soul, hip hop, reggae, R&B, rock, and jazz. She has been nominated for nine Grammy Awards. [Source]

Meshell Ndegeocello is pronounced MEE-shell n-deh-gay-o-chel-o. Ndegeocello means “free like a bird” in Swahili.

  1. Well I do like the sound of her music. I remember her hit “if that was your boyfriend he wasn’t last night”. I don’t listen to her as much as I should. The only music I have of her is the song “Rush Over” on the love Jones soundtrack that I listen to religiously.
Thank for another lesson in old school music

  2. Thank You. I remember when I first heard her music. I wondered why wasn’t this talented black women more widely known. Gotta go to the old skool shop and dig for some of her early work. Again thanks for the refresh.

  3. I’m ashamed that I’ve forgotten about Michelle. Her sound is wonderful and she doesn’t get the recognition she deserves, but you did a great job paying her just dues. 🙂

  4. good taste and again, the white kid at morehouse will rep us well and as long as he pay dues and can sing dear old morehouse with me im cool, he could have gone to the morehouse of the north, i mean harvard. welcome morehouse college class of 85

  5. OMG! This might go down as the pick of the week. Although Michelle disappointed us last time she last came through town, LOVE. HER. Outside your Door and Dreadlocks are two of my faves. I couldn’t watch that Dreadlocks because would have me thinking about some things at work! LOL!

    Very nice!

  6. What a talented artist. I have heard her music, but never actually seen a video of her performing. I had no idea she played guitar. Dreadlocks is an absolute favorite.

  7. I think I left my comments in the wrong section, or they got lost in cyberland. I knew immediately once you said she, it would be Meshell. I can’t say that I like her music, I like some songs. I don’t think I’ve given her a fair chance.

  8. This woman is totally awesome! I loved Plantation Lullabies and “outside Your Door” is still my jam!!
    Great choice!
    Have an awesome weekend!

  9. Great choice. I was wondering who the surprise pick of today would be, and so far this is it. I saw Meshell and Spearhead on tour together years ago. She can play that bass!

  10. This sista could tear a bass up! I never in a million years thought I’d see a woman that could play a bass so well. Even to this day, I do not think there are many great woman bassist out-she set a whole new standard!

Have your say.....
